Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions' warehouses in Garland and Allen, Texas, support production of the division's equipment as well as an aftermarket repair parts warehouse. Getting those orders correct is critical; customers want accurate, complete and on-time orders the first time, and production demands rapid and accurate selection of the right parts. But the two facilities were relying on an older MRP to run all of their warehouse operations, generating paper-based pick lists and employing hand-held terminals with scanners for a few basic data transfer functions. So the division decided to deploy a warehouse management system to improve its operations, and to refresh its mobile computers as a part of that project.

Improve the Balance on Hand Accuracy
Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions' goal for the project was to improve balance on hand accuracy and productivity in these facilities.

"We made a lot of effort to get our balance on hand accuracy for the low 90s, but we knew we couldn't get to the high 90s without a WMS," says John Skowron, project manager for Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions. Productivity was hard to measure, but Skowron and his colleagues knew the paperbased systems were slowing processes.

The division's 170,000-square-foot warehouses stock more than 30,000 SKUs in a large range of shapes and sizes to support its wide array of drilling products. In fact, some pieces are so large that they must be inventoried outdoors. So the new system would have to extend not only throughout standard racks and high-density aisles, but outdoors in the Texas heat as well.

With a new WMS in place, the number of transactions would skyrocket as workers recorded each movement of stock. So size and weight were important priorities in selecting new rugged mobile computers.
