Entuity, a leading provider of network management solutions and the global developer of its award-winning Eye of the Storm (EYE) software suite, today announced that the University of Minnesota (U of M) has unified monitoring and management of their extensive 802.11n wireless network using EYE, achieving their original project objective of deploying state-of-the-art technology to create a new, centrally managed network. The U of M initiative marks the world’s largest 802.11n deployment to date.
One of the Big Ten schools, U of M has the fourth largest student body in the United States, serving more than 80,000 people across the 1,204 acres of the U of M Twin Cities campus (in Minneapolis and Saint Paul). EYE helped the Office of Information Technology (OIT) meet a primary goal of implementing a manageable, expandable, and scalable wireless to accommodate campus wide coverage addressing approximately 9500 access points spread across more than 300 buildings upon full deployment. The U of M wireless network is a centrally managed OIT service that supports the contemporary mobility needs of campus affiliates and guests to wireless Internet access using devices such as laptops, PDAs, cellular phones, and other specialized wireless devices. To address those needs, EYE provided a unified, current generation network management view for both wired and wireless equipment ensuring ease of use, proactive management, reducing the need for additional staff training and simplifying NOC procedures. Also included in the U of M central network management strategy was the implementation of a viable green IT program identify and detail infrastructure power and cost reduction opportunities. Using EYE’s Green IT Perspective to track nightly workstation shut-down of more than 50,000 devices, U of M can realize more than $2 million in total annual utility costs at 100 percent compliance – a significant savings both monetarily and in the reduction of CO2 output.
“Although the primary objective of the wireless upgrade project was to provide fast, flexible, and secure wireless access to our user community, it needed to be done in a way that was complementary to our existing infrastructure and would not introduce new maintenance headaches," says Louis Hammond, Director of Design and Operations Networking and Telecommunications Services, University of Minnesota Office of Information Technology. "Managing the new wireless environment in our existing network management solution, Eye of the Storm, allows us to leverage existing processes and expertise giving us economies of acquisition, deployment, operation, and ongoing maintenance.”
Steve Cawley, VP and CIO, University of Minnesota Office of Information Technology, adds: "A tightening economy and escalating energy costs have a secondary impact on public universities – affordability. Along with our long-standing commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly initiatives, the University of Minnesota also is dedicated to providing affordable higher education to our students. Entuity’s EYE has assisted us in both our wireless upgrade project, but has also enabled us to reduce our operational costs, allowing us to continue delivering high-quality education that is accessible to a broader range of people in our community.”
