One of the most common questions I'm asked is, "Where can I make money in POS?" While there definitely still are pockets of money in what I'd consider traditional POS markets (retail, hospitality, grocery, and c-store), technological advancements and the economy are rapidly changing what consumers expect (e.g. kiosks, self-checkout, mobility) and what requirements your customers need in order to do business (e.g. storage devices for video, security appliances for PCI [payment card industry] compliance, wireless access points). One VAR/software developer I recently spoke with, Marathon Data Systems, is having success selling mobile POS solutions to niche retail verticals. While speaking with Chris Sullens, Marathon's president, he shared the details of a recent install that shed light on how the VAR is making money by taking POS outside the four walls. As you might guess, doing so requires using technologies a POS VAR typically doesn't resell.
