Case Study: Healthcare Bar Coding: Recession-Proof?

By Mike Monocello, Business Solutions magazine

If you want to get rich on bar coding, you need to get into the healthcare vertical. Over the past year I've had many conversations with various bar coding experts — both VARs and vendors — about what hot markets VARs should be targeting. Every one responded with healthcare. Indeed, while other markets are struggling due to the economy, healthcare bar coding needs continue to increase, and those VARs selling such solutions increase revenue. While the road to healthcare bar coding success isn't easy, it is lucrative. One VAR, Coridian Technologies, has found success by shifting its focus from manufacturing to healthcare. While other VARs are struggling to break even this year, Coridian is on pace to achieve 20% revenue growth.

Why Sell Bar Code Solutions To Healthcare?
Coridian is a traditional auto ID VAR with a background and history in manufacturing, specializing in work-in-process, electronics, and high-performance/harsh-environment labeling applications. According to Mike Cleary, president of Coridian, the VAR got into healthcare by looking for similarly harsh environments in other markets. "We took our experience in selling labels that can make it through circuit board processes and moved it into the lab where there are a lot of cleaning agents, liquid nitrogen, and other harsh processes," he explains.
