Considering the amount of attention given to POS security in recent years, you may wonder if any sales opportunities remain surrounding this hot topic. When our experts were asked about the most significant trends in POS software that VARs should be aware of, most agreed that security still is a major concern. Indeed, one of the biggest trends is the influence of PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliance and PABP (payment application best practices).
"The nuances of PCI and PABP standards for credit card processing need to be understood by VARs," says Fraser Brooks, business development manager for Profitek POS Solutions (by InfoSpec Systems). "While both PCI and PABP are security concerns, the two have separate requirements." PABP compliance has to do with protecting, managing, and controlling cardholder data. PCI is broader, encompassing security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, and software design.
