The days of the electronic cash register are numbered. Chances are if you shop at a retail store or go out for dinner, your purchase will be entered into a Point of Sale (POS) terminal. These computerized replacements for cash registers are much more than money tills. Among their features is the ability to record and track customer orders, process credit and debit cards, connect to other systems in a network, and manage inventory. These systems can also be run remotely, enabling a teacher to train on-site employees in their use from a central location. There are many manufacturers taking advantage of the demand for all-in-one POS systems, each offering standard and optional features such as customer promotions, credit-card confirmations and staff scheduling. The POS software packages available are even more numerous.
