Industry Perspective: Major PCI Change: A Call To VAR Action
December 15, 2009
By Mike Monocello, Chief Editor, Business Solutions magazine
About one month prior to this issue, a group of restaurants filed a lawsuit against a POS software manufacturer for what the restaurants are saying is a lack of compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). They say the lack of compliance allowed Romainian hackers to breach their POS systems. It remains to be seen whether the suit has merit, but it really doesn't matter. The software vendor now has to defend its reputation and incur legal fees. Additionally, the restaurants were forced to pay fines from the card processors and pay for security audits to ensure further breaches don't happen.
