Recent economic turmoil has hammered retail sales, depressing retailers' IT investments in the process. But there have been signs of recovery, and a combination of pent-up demand, aging POS systems, and looming compliance deadlines could help boost the market for POS systems and peripherals, say some industry leaders. "We've seen a number of IT departments delaying projects they would like to have done over a year ago," says Greg Carlson, CEO of MMF Cash Drawer. "You have to wonder how many systems are out there that are approaching eight or nine years old. With the improved operating returns that a number of retailers are reporting, we're hoping that will free up some IT budgets." That said, it's important to look carefully at what problems your retail customer base is trying to solve. "Retailers are going to be examining the return on investment of any system very hard right now, so it's important that the solution solves some pain points for retailers and provides a sufficient ROI," says Mark Olson, president of APG Cash Drawer.
