Ask Coach: How Do I Empower My Team To Solve Problems? (Part 1)

By Rich Anderson, executive coach with HTG Peer Groups

Q: How do I empower my team to make decisions on their own, to look at the whole picture of the problem, and bring it to resolution?

Coach: I hear you. Your question is common among your peers. A team that can’t (or won’t) independently make decisions and act is a real frustration. Your question makes me think of several great American television icons from my childhood: Mighty Mouse, Tonight Show’s Johnny Carson as Carnac the Magnificent, and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

Now, don’t shut me off like an old black and white TV. Let’s briefly walk together down this lane of iconic T.V. history. Your team has some real issues. As your coach, I first want to focus on you. Let’s see if their failures are in any way tied to your behavior.
