IMS Research estimates that by 2014, the network-based surveillance market will exceed $1.8B. According to Alaistair Hayfield, research manager for IMS Research, as video surveillance moves onto the network, an expansion in skill set is often required. Proficiency in system design, camera placement, lighting levels, etc. must be complemented by a knowledge of networking protocols, port forwarding, and bandwidth management. Smart integrators have realized there is a large skills gap in the video surveillance industry; these integrators have a clear business advantage over security integrators who haven't embraced the move to IP.
