4 Considerations For Your 2016 Data Center Initiatives

By Clayton Weise, Cloud Architect, Key Information Systems

It’s 2016 now, not 2015. I’ve had to remind myself of that a few times now when scribbling the date down quickly. The New Year comes with a number of challenges to address, aside, of course, from remembering which year it is. Looking ahead at the next 12 months and beyond is a major undertaking for those of us in the data center industry. Technology changes constantly, and it’s up to us to be ready for it all. Here’s a look at four significant trends I expect to shake up the data center in 2016.

  1. Storage will keep changing for the better. It was only a matter of time before flash moved more prominently into the forefront as a result of lower pricing and more mature compression technology. We’ll start to see more use within the data center but mainly for high-priority workloads. Not everything needs flash. As a result, hybrid data centers will become the best way to help ensure optimal data center utilization and efficiency. Persistent random-access memory (RAM) comes with major disruption opportunities for both computing and storage. It will secure a place in the enterprise, running critical workloads for some. And, despite all of this advancement, there will still be a home for tape in the data center.
