Data Governance, Security Concerns Drive Adoption Of Private Cloud Solutions

A survey of IT professionals conducted by CTERA shows that concerns about data governance and security are driving organizations to turn to cloud storage.

An entry on the CTERA Blog includes an infographic summarizing key findings from the study. According to the infographic, more than half of respondents (58 percent) prefer private or virtual private enterprise file sync and share (EFSS) versus pure SaaS alternatives. Of those surveyed, 83 percent have established policies that forbid the use of SaaS file sharing, and 35 percent have experienced “data leakage” due to the use of public cloud file sharing.

CTERA’s second annual 2015 Enterprise Storage Report also found 70 percent of survey respondents are “concerned” or “extremely concerned” with data breaches.

Rani Osnat, VP of strategic marketing at CTERA said in a press release, that “organizations are leveraging cloud storage for efficiency gains and cost savings, while combatting security, control and governance requirements with virtual-private or fully-private topologies.”

CTERA also asserts there is a huge opportunity for providers of private cloud storage tools and those providing storage Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to reduce costs, while maintaining security and control. And 59 percent of those organizations indicated that they favor a private cloud FSS solution run either on hosted (virtual private) infrastructure or in their own data center. In addition, the study shows 42 percent of enterprises in the more heavily regulated financial services, government and life sciences industries and 40 percent of organizations with 10,000 employees or more prefer a completely private cloud that does not rely on external hosted infrastructure.
