E-Myth's Gerber Asks IT Solutions Providers, "What's Missing From This Picture?"

Michael Gerber, author of the business best-seller The E-Myth Revisited and other books on the topic of small business and entrepreneurship, challenges you to look at your IT Solutions Provider business and ask, “What’s missing from this picture?”

Gerber joined Business Solutions president Jim Roddy for part two in their webinar series to help VAR, managed services provider (MSP), and ISV executives improve their businesses. In part one of Why Most Small Companies Simply Refuse to Grow And What To Do About Yours, Gerber stressed IT solutions providers struggling to grow need to start over, abandoning “Old Co.” in favor of creating “New Co.” Gerber suggests starting with a blank page and creating a vision by answering questions such as “What am I here to do?” “Why am I here to do it?” and “How can I create a company that serves my customers in a way they’ve never been served before?”

In this second webinar in the three-part series, Gerber says once you have clearly articulated your vision, you need to develop processes, linked to the stages of business growth, essential to a successful company:

  1. Client fulfillment
  2. Client acquisition
  3. Management
  4. Leadership

Gerber explains these should be turnkey processes: “You are designing a company that is a core operating system, with all of the components thought through to produce a particular result for a particular consumer.” He says a gap analysis — an assessment of what’s missing from the picture — can help identify systems that need to be in place, and to conclude the webinar, he reveals the five essential functions that will help you create a systems-dependent company rather than a people-dependent company.
