Fortinet® Earns Coveted Third NSS Labs "Recommend" Rating In 2013 Next Generation Firewall Group Test

FortiGate-3600C, FortiGate-800C and FortiGate-3240C Honored for Outstanding Security Effectiveness, Enterprise Management and Total Cost of Ownership for Next Generation Firewall, Firewall and IPS

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) - a world leader in high-performance network security - today announced its enterprise-class FortiGate-3600C earned a top ranking for next generation firewall security appliances from  NSS Labs. This is the third consecutive award Fortinet has earned from NSS Labs in the last seven months. In August 2012, the company’s FortiGate-3240C received the “Recommend” award for IPS, and in February 2013, the company’s FortiGate-800C received the “Recommend” award for firewall.

Next Generation Firewall: Recommended

Fortinet’s FortiGate-3600C is one of the top performing systems out of nine next generation firewall products. See Figure 1 for the 2013 NSS Network Next Generation Firewall Security Value Map, which includes competitive rankings. The map can also be viewed here:

NSS Labs uses real-world testing methodologies and uses empirical data from its 2013 Next Generation Firewall Group Test to produce the Security Value Map (SVM). The SVM measures the security effectiveness and value (cost per protected Mbps) of tested product configurations in a variety of likely customer use cases.

IPS: Recommended

In August 2012, the company’s FortiGate-3240C enterprise-class next generation firewall was tested against 14 security appliances and earned a “Recommend” rating for its superior intrusion prevention performance. The product delivered 6.25 Gbps throughput and sub-10 microsecond latency, blocked 95.0% of attacks against client applications and 96.0% overall and correctly identified 100% of NSS’ evasion attempts without error. See Figure 2 of the 2012 NSS Intrusion Prevention System Security Value Map, which includes competitive rankings. The map can also be viewed here:

Firewall: Recommended

In February 2013, the company’s FortiGate-800C network security appliance was one of the top performing enterprise firewalls and earned a “Recommend” rating based on 100% scores for overall protection, stability & reliability, firewall enforcement and security effectiveness. In addition, NSS Labs verified that the FortiGate-800C is able to sustain 9.7 Gbps using real-world traffic and the product scored 100% for Stability, 100% for Evasion, 100% for Leakage and 100% in the central management review. All of this resulted in a TCO of $4 per protected megabit and 100% test scores for security and management effectiveness.

Testing for all three of these award wins was conducted free of charge and NSS Labs did not receive any compensation in return for Fortinet’s participation.

About the FortiGate Enterprise Security Platform

The FortiGate-800C, FortiGate-3240C and FortiGate-3600C network security appliances provide exceptional throughput, ultra low latency and a wide range of configuration options for next generation environments that have requirements for lightning fast transactions, such as financial services, Voice over IP (VoIP), BYOD/Mobile and Web 2.0 applications. The broad network security capabilities of these appliances address several critical market dynamics:

  • Soaring bandwidth demands due to the increasing use of content-rich social media and Web 2.0 applications
  • The explosion of mobile devices accessing these applications – increasingly through Wi-Fi connections – that require an application firewall with the ability to process millions of connections per second
  • More frequent and increasingly sophisticated attacks employing the latest detection evasion techniques being launched from the application layer

The FortiGate product family combines firewall, application control, IP Sec and SSL VPN, intrusion prevention, on-device and cloud-based sandboxing, antimalware and Web filtering into a single device with all features turned on for a single price. All FortiGate devices provide native dual-stack support for IPv6 traffic out of the box as Fortinet has been a leader in protecting IPv6 networks since 2007, achieving both IPv6-Ready and JITC certifications in 2008.

“We’re pleased to see our FortiGate-800C, FortiGate-3240C and FortiGate-3600C recognized for their extremely high performance and low total cost of ownership by NSS Labs,” said Patrick Bedwell, vice president of product marketing for Fortinet. “We know our customers rely on rigorous third-party testing from independent testing labs like NSS Labs when they are evaluating new technology.”
