The Smart VAR Summit: Age Of Intelligence — IoT, Cloud, & Mobility Convergence, powered by ScanSource, Zebra Technologies, and Business Solutions, was filled with advice for integrators and solutions providers on how to deliver Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to their clients.

At the event, held October 14 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA, Jim Roddy, president of Business Solutions, conducted interviews for BSMtv with Mike Monocello, BSM editor in chief, Paul Constantine, president of ScanSource POS and Barcode U.S., and Tom Bianculli, VP of Zebra’s Enterprise Technology Office. Roddy asked them to share their impressions of the most valuable takeaways from the summit for solutions providers.

Monocello said it is important to realize with IoT solutions the discussion is less about the speeds and fees of technology, but rather about the way the technology can help your clients improve their processes, reduce expenses, and increase customer satisfaction. He commented that this means integrators and solutions providers need to be close to their customers and understand what their challenges are.

Constantine said the impact RFID has on the Internet of Things marketplace is notable. “RFID, as a method of gathering data in an automated fashion from assets and collecting information on those assets, is really playing a big role in the opportunities around IoT,” he said.

During his interview, Bianculli (pictured, left, with Roddy) said advice that resonated is to start with the device side of sales and look at how you can attach the capabilities of those devices to upsell the IoT or Enterprise Asset Intelligence value propositions. He added that some speakers suggested choosing a “lighthouse” customer and solving a business challenge they have — one they haven’t been able to solve because they didn’t have the data or the right connectivity — and then to leverage that success. “Go take that first one down and just spiral out from there,” Bianculli advised.
