NTT Communications Offers SkyWay SDK For iOS/Android Applications Using WebRTC Platform

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT, announced recently an unprecedented software development kit (SDK), available immediately, to develop iOS and Android applications/services that utilize the open SkyWay platform for Web-based (browser) real-time communications (WebRTC). The SDK is available at http://nttcom.github.io/skyway.

Previously, developers had to build WebRTC libraries and signaling servers to equip iOS and Android applications with WebRTC functions, which enable real-time peer-to-peer communications via PC and smartphone browsers and native apps without using servers. With the new SDK, however, they can use SkyWay's library and signaling server for WebRTC applications, thereby simplifying and accelerating the development process. This is the first time in Japan to offer an SDK for smartphone applications and services using a WebRTC platform.

SkyWay, launched in December 2013 as Japan's first WebRTC platform, offers SDKs for web browser environments deploying JavaScript. More than 8,000 applications for wide-ranging purposes have been registered so far.

With the rising popularity of SkyWay, developers asked if they could use it to develop iOS and Android native applications. Safari and Chrome did not support WebRTC for iOS and some versions of Android browser. With the new SDK, however, users can now equip iOS and Android native applications with WebRTC functions.

SkyWay Case Histories:

National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) Miraikan held events that combine SkyWay and the educational robot Romo, enabling parents to communicate with their children by remote controlling Romo. This first user trial of SDK for iOS launched today.

MENDORI INFOMATION TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION Mendori leveraged SkyWay to develop its Web Help Desk, which enables users to call the contact center by simply clicking on a web page, and SkyRTC, a video conference service.

Asratec Corp.
SkyWay is used for a Web controller that simplifies the remote control of humanoid robot operations and movements control via a platform using the V-Sido operating system.

Academy Corporation.
SkyWay was deployed for amyROOM (beta), an online private tutoring service for online consulting about study subjects.

By launching SDK this time, developers of iOS and Android application will be able to easily use WebRTC, and insert the P2P images and voice communication functions and data transmission. NTT Com aims to create innovative service that would change society, while collaborating with application developers.
