RSPA President's Note: RetailNOW 2013 Is 'RetailWOW'

The title may seem a bit self-serving, but the WOW has to do with what is taking place in our industry, which was very apparent at RSPA’s Annual Convention and Expo, RetailNOW. RetailNOW seems to have truly earned its tagline, “where the industry meets.” Over the past few years the show has achieved significant growth. In 2006 there were 800 attendees and around 100 exhibitors. At RetailNOW 2013 there were over 2,100 attendees, 175 exhibitors and over 25 industry-specific education sessions. The growth of the show mirrors the growing business opportunities in the retail technology marketplace. But here’s the catch – the old way of conducting business does not work in today’s market place.

Mobile products, a recurring revenue or SaaS business model and the intersection of POS and Payments are providing more business opportunities for those businesses that want and are able to change. At the RetailNOW general session there waa very poignant call to action for RSPA members: “The world is changing and you have two choices: adapt or exit the business.”
