Shark Tales And Monolithic IT Vendors — But Good News For The IT Channel

Back in my home country of Australia a recent series of shark attacks, far above average, are causing distress among swimmers and attracting a lot of media attention. The reason for the change in shark patterns however is because the fish schools are coming in closer to shore, apparently a result of warming sea currents, bringing the predator sharks with them.

And so is the case in the field service mobility market.

Over the past two years a number of large monolithic vendors have consumed a number of field service mobility and scheduling software companies. So is this simply the consolidation of an industry or is it evidence of a change in the environment?

There have been major shifts in the field service software market in short term history, specifically a shift to COTS “configurable off the shelf” solutions in tandem with a significant move to the cloud. The corollary to this sea change is revenues of old model software vendors plummeting as the diet enforced in cloud monthly payments and COTS low implementation fees take toll. So these market changes have made a number of smaller software companies vulnerable to a takeover.
