Shippensburg Emergency Services Calls On SMB IP Phone System Vendor ESI For Communications And Access Control Needs For New $7 Million LEED-Certified, State-Of-The-Art Facility

Phone System Improves Personnel Productivity, Delivers Enhanced Building Safety and Security, and Lowers Monthly Telecommunications Costs

SHIPPENSBURG, PA — Shippensburg Area Emergency Medical Services (SAEMS), a provider of regional EMS services, today announced it has upgraded its legacy phone system to an ESI-200 Communications Server. The new system is an integral IT and telecommunications system, housed in a brand new $7 million, state-of-the art, 37,000-square-foot, LEED-certified facility that is collaboratively shared by SAEMS and the Vigilant Hose Company.

SAEMS upgraded to the ESI communications system to dramatically enhance its fire-life safety and ambulatory personnel’s emergency and non-emergency daily productivity, to increase the building’s safety, and to regulate workplace compliance, all while dramatically reducing monthly telecom expenditures. Core to the feature set were access control and video surveillance for the facility, which are bundled as optional capabilities in the ESI system. The system also features robust presence management, which allows for presence status, call control, entrance security, and documented tracking of users’ work hours and attendance history.

“We evaluated a number of phone systems to assess their ability to meet our specific operational needs, and they all fell short of the ESI phone system’s capabilities,” said David Lindenmuth, deputy emergency management coordinator for the borough of Shippensburg. “The features that were bundled with the system — access control and presence management, specifically — seamlessly allowed us to monitor our staff and gave us very granular control over time-of-day and day-of-week access for every authorized individual. The ability to lock and unlock doors during a fire call was extremely important, and the ESI system gives us precise control of egress and ingress. We are already experiencing significant efficiencies, cost savings, and improved staff productivity.”

Glessner Alarm and Communications, an ESI Elite Reseller located in Hagerstown, MD, oversaw the rapid deployment of the ESI phone system for SAEMS. The deployment, which was completed in five days, consisted of the ESI-200 Communications Server, a high-performance IP phone system that unites the communication and productivity needs of small-to-medium sized organizations, and 36 phones and 43 RFID readers that are used for access control and presence management. This is a dual-use facility shared between EMS and Fire House personnel, thus nearly all doors or common areas, such as the fitness room, are equipped with access control devices to provide greater control and compliance to security regulations.

“Integrated access control added to the communications system was a major requirement for Shippensburg Emergency Services,” said Darcy Kline, Vice President of Communications at Glessner Alarm and Communications. “What’s more, the ability to handle access control both on-site and at remote sites by individual and time-of-day was paramount for Shippensburg in terms of workplace compliance and overall efficiency.”

“Shippensburg Area EMS represents the type of progressive company that understands the significant value of a fully integrated IP phone system that can also optionally include access control and presence management,” said ESI President and COO George Platt. “We design our phone systems for forward-thinking small and mid-sized organizations that view their phone system as an integral part of their overall IT and operations infrastructure with higher-level, productivity-enhancing features, and at an affordable price. The Shippensburg/Vigilant collaborative partnership and facility is an excellent example of that type of thinking, and we are pleased to welcome them to the ESI family.”
