Source: Unitrends MSP

This white paper from Unitrends presents their six virtualization backup fairy tales including three relating to VMware host-level backup, two Hyper-V backup, and one general virtualization backup pricing fairy tale.

The six virtualization fairy tales discussed are:

  • VMware Host-Level Backup Works With All VMWare Host Environments
  • VMWare Host-Level Backup Works Well With All Deduplication Strategies
  • VMWare Host-Level Backup Has Problems When You Use Microsoft Windows Guest Operating Systems
  • Hyper-V Host-Level Backup Is Efficient
  • Source-Level Deduplication is an Effective Technique to Use with Hyper-V Environments
  • You Have to Pay for Advanced Virtualization Services

VMWare Host-Level Backup Works Well With All Deduplication Strategies

Deduplication is the elimination of redundant data so that you get more backup per dollar spent. Deduplication has two primary forms: source-level and target-level. Source-level can potentially use less network bandwidth but uses much more processor, memory, and other resources of the computer you are protecting. Target-level does not use the resources of the computer you are protecting but may use more network bandwidth.
