STORServer Expands Market Reach, Builds Backup Appliances Powered By Commvault Simpana Software

Industry-leading data management software now coupled with world’s No. 1 data backup appliance

STORServer, the leading provider of proven data backup solutions for the mid-market, announces recently that it is now offering backup appliances built on CommVault Simpana 10 data and information management software. As enterprises of all sizes continue to embrace turnkey systems to solve backup and recovery challenges, customers can deploy scale-out data protection in minutes with the STORServer appliance pre-configured and pre-tested with Simpana 10 software.

The STORServer Backup Appliance line, ranked number one in the world by analyst firm DCIG, is a family of purpose-built backup appliances designed specifically for the automation, performance and price-point demanded by growing companies. The appliance is composed of uniquely integrated hardware and software components in a quickly implemented, easy-to-use and fully supported solution. STORServer will also extend its reseller network and support services to provide point of sale and maintenance support for CommVault customers.

Recognized as the industry leader in data protection software (by Gartner, Forrester and DCIG), CommVault has redefined enterprise backup and recovery by integrating data protection, intelligent archive and mobile access to speed recovery, reduce costs and simplify operations. Simpana software transcends traditional limitations of backup offerings and third-party point products by blending physical and virtual machine protection, hardware snapshots, workflow automation, endpoint protection, global deduplication, replication, search and intuitive reporting within a single platform. Gartner Inc. placed CommVault in the “Leaders” category of its 2013 Magic Quadrant of Enterprise Backup/Recovery Software.

“We’re excited to offer our customers the world’s best data backup appliance built on the industry’s leading software platforms for data protection,” said Bill Smoldt, President of STORServer. “We made the decision to expand our product offering because CommVault has taken a leadership role in the data protection industry, and it is in our customers’ best interest to support the Simpana software. CommVault’s growing market share comes as a natural fit for STORServer as we reach further into the enterprise.”

“The key to unlocking value from business data begins with having an easy way to instantly protect, recover and access current and historical information,” said David West, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and business development for CommVault. “Forward-thinking organizations now have more options to manage data differently with the integration of the Simpana software platform with STORServer’s amazingly simple to deploy backup appliance.”

The CommVault appliances will be available as options in the current STORServer product lines starting Nov. 15, 2013. The CommVault BA600 model is sized for IT shops, corporate departments or branch offices with 1-5 terabytes (TBs) of data. Appliances are also available in three of the Enterprise Backup Appliance models (EBA800, EBA1200 and EBA2200) and are ideal for customers with up to one petabyte of data to protect. Prices for the appliances begin at less than $10,000 with the addition of software offered in both capacity and client/application-based license options.

“The flexible data protection features of CommVault software and STORServer’s dedication to offer a backup appliance for every environment will save our customers a lot of time and money,” said Greg Jehs, director of data management for Meridian IT Inc. “We believe this new solution will radically simplify all aspects of data management and recovery for physical and virtualized infrastructure and the cloud.”

“The STORServer Appliance, powered by CommVault Simpana software now gives us the flexibility to provide the best solution to meet the needs of any organization,” said Chad J. Kuhar, vice president at Arkay Data Storage Solutions. “We can shorten the time it takes to provide full enterprise data protection, so that customers can focus their IT resources on creating value from the managed data."

The launch of the STORServer Backup Appliance, powered by CommVault, marks the first time the company has offered an enterprise data protection software engine other than IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). STORServer has found success in taking IBM TSM, the data protection software leader for Fortune 500 companies, and bringing it to the mid-market. The company’s appliance approach to backup removes costly implementation and lengthy installation common for getting enterprise data protection in place for mid-market operations. The full diagnostic support assures customers that appliance automation allows them to concentrate on their core business.

“STORServer’s commitment to deliver service and appliances on IBM’s proven hardware and software is stronger than ever with the delivery of our reengineered appliance models earlier this year,” notes Smoldt. “Both IBM and CommVault offer the proven elegant enterprise data protection solutions that our customers want and need in today’s competitive environment. In one sense, we’re simply adding the ability to have a second engine on our appliance. In another sense, we’re broadening our enterprise appliance reach with another robust data protection option.”
