Take Your Liquor Store Customers Out Of PCI Scope

By The Business Solutions Network

A VAR installs a $35,000 POS upgrade to solve the multistore, PCI needs of its liquor store customer.

It’s not uncommon in the retail world to find resellers who have long-standing relationships with their customers. In the case of Total Register Systems (TRS), that has been serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul area for more than 30 years, the VAR has been working with the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association (MMBA) and the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association (MLBA) that entire time. Over the years, the POS solutions have changed, as you’d expect. Cash registers gave way to POS systems, which were upgraded with newer technology as the years passed.

Brian Anderson, owner, TRS, explains that he recently had some concern over the old POS system being used with one of the MMBA’s members, the City of Elk River. “The software that we used for years was bought out, and the new company has a new focus and direction for their product that we didn’t really feel comfortable with,” he recalls. “Additionally, we were also concerned with the way credit card information was handled by the software and what that meant concerning PCI compliance.” While their previous system was PCI-compliant, Anderson sought a POS and payment solution that was out of scope so that the MMBA didn’t have to concern themselves with PCI anymore.
