The Tablet Takeover — Why tPOS Is The New mPOS
The one thing you can be certain of in the payments industry is change, and point of sale has undergone a rapid evolution in recent years. Today, a POS system doesn’t simply ring up a sale. POS solutions now run the business, from back-end accounting to customer-facing activities like loyalty programs and beacon-enabled promotions. Consumer demand for anywhere, anytime commerce has been the impetus for this evolution, and independent software developers have reacted by creating feature- rich, powerful POS applications — applications designed, from the ground up, to be used on smartphones and tablets.
One of the legacies of traditional POS systems is that they were hard to replace — significant capital investments and proprietary software combined to make it difficult for merchants to change or easily upgrade. These systems also left behind many small and mid-sized merchants, limiting their options for payment acceptance and many other operational features. Early mPOS solutions, while highly beneficial to small and micro merchants, lacked the power and sophistication needed by the majority of the SME market. This is where tablets take center stage.
