Using Video Security Data For Truly Intelligent Business Intelligence

By Ian Westmacott, Computer Engineering Manager, Tyco Security Products

Using the data from video surveillance systems can provide your merchant clients with a wealth of information about your sales, workforce and even the efficacy of marketing strategies. Understanding how to transform this data and use it intelligently, however, can be a challenge. Here are four important features/applications to consider when trying to make sense of business’ Big Data:

  1. Data Visualizer. Security and video surveillance systems can tell us a lot about business, which is good news. The bad news is that the amount of available data has become massive, as it can come from access control and event reports, video surveillance footage, associated analytics data and various edge devices installed within a system. Without a means to make sense of it all, this wealth of data can be overwhelming and unusable. A data visualization tool can take the vast pools of information now at the disposal of security personnel and management and turn it into more comprehensible data such as graphs and charts that correspond to particular video clips or other data points. Put simply, data visualization is all about recognizing patterns and trends and presenting them in an understandable format. Once your client is able to start thinking about all that data in broader terms, it is less overwhelming and much more useful. And that really is the good news.
