Mobility Solutions And Healthcare

Business Solutions president Jim Roddy and Matt Jordan, healthcare account executive at Datalogic, discussed healthcare’s mobility trend at the Smart VAR Healthcare Summit.

“The trend is going from a corded solution to wireless,” Jordan said. He explained that wireless bar code scanners free caregivers to move around a patient’s room, enhancing workflows. Mobile computers are also finding a role in healthcare. “A nurse going to a patient’s room for just a few seconds may not want to move the whole workstation on wheels. Instead a nurse can grab a mobile computer, carry out the work in a few seconds, and — using the mobile device running the software application — upload to EHR (electronic health records) in real time and quickly move on to the next patient,” Jordan explained.

He said, when creating solution for healthcare, VARs should ask how to use existing infrastructure to enhance the caregiver’s process, mitigate errors, and free up more time for the patient.

Roddy asked if saving time and reducing errors are the two biggest pain points that VARs should address when speaking to their clients about mobility solutions.

“Probably so,” Jordan responded. “From a workflow standpoint, during a 12-hour shift, I’d want to maximize the time with patients instead of essentially carrying out minutia.”

“But there is a cost factor as well,” he added. A solution that helps to mitigate errors could save large litigation costs. And, he said, “Time is money. When you are saving a caregiver time, that equals money: That’s moving on to the next patient, treating additional patients, and more revenue for that healthcare environment.”

The Aug. 11 Smart VAR Healthcare Summit was held at the Renaissance Dallas Richardson Hotel. Smart VAR Healthcare Summits, powered by ScanSource and Business Solutions, are sponsored by: Honeywell, Datalogic, and Zebra.
