What You Can Tell Your Clients When They Ask Why They Should Migrate To Windows 10

By Patrick Regan, Senior Systems Engineer, Noverus Innovations, Inc., ASCII Member since 2014

Microsoft’s track record for operating systems/operating environments seems to be that they release a well-received release followed by an ill-conceived release. After the success of Windows 7, Microsoft attempted to make an operating system that would work on desktop computers, laptop computers, and small mobile devices such as tablets and phones. However, Windows 8 changed how users worked in the past and Windows 8 was not flexible enough to adapt to the different types of devices. As a result, Windows 8 was a failure. As a temporary fix, Microsoft soon released Windows 8.1.

Under the new watchful eye of Satya Nadella (Microsoft’s new CEO), Microsoft has learned from their mistakes with Windows 8/8.1, has listened to the customer complaints, and released Windows 10. To distance the new version of Windows from Windows 8/8.1, Microsoft skipped Windows 9 and went to Windows 10. It returned the familiarity of Windows 7 by bringing back the Start button and menu, includes a modern interface optimized for multiple devices used in the workplace, and enhanced Windows security.

One of the first and obvious differences between Windows 7 and 8 was changes to the user interface. One of the complaints of Windows 8 was the removal of the Start button and menu. Instead, users were given a Start page that consumes the entire screen and that was automatically opened when you first start Windows. When working on the Windows desktop, it was not intuitive on how to open the Start page. As a temporary fix, Windows 8.1 brought back the Start button, which allowed the user to open the Start page easily and gave the users the choice to start with the Desktop or the Start page. In Windows 10, the Windows 10 start button and menu is a combination of the Windows 7 Start button, the Windows Start menu, and the Windows 8.1 tiles (including live tiles).
