Just Own It: Can Self-Leadership Work In Your IT Solutions Provider?

In the ultimate move toward self-leadership in the workplace, Zappos (among others) recently announced they were eliminating managers in an effort to keep things less corporate.  In a movement called holacracy, teams are expected to know what needs to get done and do it, focusing on the relationships rather than the individual to meet objectives.

3 Things Small Businesses Want From Their IT Providers

The IT services market is a unique one, and the SMB niche within it is even further refined. Small and medium-sized businesses have far fewer resources (and minimal manpower) when compared to their enterprise counterparts — and traditionally, these restrictions have prevented smaller organizations from gaining access to emerging technologies and infrastructure solutions.

What IT Solutions Providers Need To Know About Bitcoins And Cryptocurrency

Bitcoins are a form of cryptocurrency, meaning they do not have a physical representation. Instead they are stored in an online exchange in anonymous wallets. They can be transferred anywhere in the world via the Internet. They can be paid from anywhere, to anywhere with total anonymity. The long and short of it is: They are the ideal form of payment for illicit activities and hackers.

  • What To Consider When Planning Your Business Exit Strategy, Part I
What To Consider When Planning Your Business Exit Strategy, Part I

One of the areas I spend considerable time on is helping business owners prepare for and then complete an exit from the business they often founded and have worked in for decades. Let’s get one thing straight:  It is a big deal for an entrepreneurial owner to exit his or her business. In fact, it is a very big deal. The saddest call I receive comes from a small business owner that has worked in their company for decades. It was their creation, and they have poured sweat and blood into building it to where it is today.

ABOUT BACKUP & DISASTER RECOVERY

Backup & disaster recovery (BDR) includes cloud backup, hybrid storage, recovery software, local storage, managed services, and more.

A backup is a copy or archive of computer data that can be used to restore the original data if lost. Backups are also used to restore data from an earlier time. They are a simple form of disaster recovery and should be a part of a disaster recovery plan however; a disaster recovery plan should never be just backups alone. Backups can often require significant amounts of data storage space and can be complicated to maintain and organize. Many different methods have been developed to optimize backup procedures, including ways to deal with open files, live data, encryption, compression, and de-duplication. Backup solutions should also include dry runs in order to verify the reliability of the data in the backup.

Disaster recovery is a set of rules, policies, processes, and procedures that organizations set up and follow in order to maintain a running technical infrastructure in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. A subset of business continuity, disaster recovery deals specifically with the IT or technological systems of a business.

Many companies choose managed backup & disaster recovery services, where a vendor provides automatic backups or backup services via on-premise hardware and/or cloud storage along with the necessary software and support.

Common strategies for data protection include backups made to tape and sent off-site, backups made to disk on-site and copied or made directly to disks off-site, data replication to off-site locations, hybrid cloud solutions that replicate data to on-site appliances and off-site data centers, and high availability systems which replicate data and systems off-site and enable continuous access even after a disaster.
