POS & PAYMENT PROCESSING EXECUTIVE COMMENTARY

  • Selling To The Millennial Customer
    Selling To The Millennial Customer

Many of us have owned our businesses for numerous years and come from the Boomer Generation. Boomers are frugal for the most part, and were raised with dial telephones, three-channel television, and in a single-income family.  We saved our leftovers, ate everything on our plates, and the stores were closed on Sundays. We grew up with a mindset of budgets, and when we got out of college it was the ‘70s. We listened to vinyl records, FM radio, and drove an American-made car.

Solutions Providers: Whatever You Do, Don’t Do This

The “this” that I’m talking about is the practice that I’ve seen MSPs (managed services providers) and IT consultants repeat many times.  Tragically, each repetition costs the MSP and/or IT consultant a ton of cash.  The behavior that I’m talking about is the result of success that the MSP has had. Ironically, the more successful small MSPs are, the more rapidly they want to grow, hire more engineers, and enjoy more recurring revenue.

Strategic IT Sales: Creating AVision And Getting Buy-In

Strategic sales is the process of taking your top few accounts and looking at them differently than you do your other clients. With these accounts, you want to jointly create a vision and a roadmap for the next three to five years. This includes not only what you can provide for them but also some of their other partners including their telecom and physical plant providers. Broaden your vision.

  • The Merchant And EMV: What You Need To Know To Prepare For The Magstripe To EMV Transition
The Merchant And EMV: What You Need To Know To Prepare For The Magstripe To EMV Transition

The EMV standard was developed in the 1990s to mitigate card-present fraud in Europe and other markets where online, real-time connectivity to issuers’ authorization systems was not widely available. The unique data provided by the EMV chip embedded in payment cards with this standard makes it nearly impossible for fraudsters to produce counterfeit cards. Fraud related to counterfeit cards has essentially been eliminated in countries where EMV was widely adopted.

ABOUT POINT OF SALE (POS) AND PAYMENT PROCESSING

Point of sale (POS) is the place where retail transactions are completed; where payment is exchanged for goods or services. POS is used in many retail industries and many require unique customizations to the hardware and software in order to accommodate their transactions. POS features include scanners, manual and electronic cash drawers, scales, EFTPOS terminals, handheld scanners, touch screens, and many other options. Modern POS systems often act as more than just a system to process transactions by providing inventory management, warehousing, CRM, financials, and more.

In addition to standard on-premise POS systems, modern POS software can be delivered from the cloud in the software as a service (SaaS) model. Cloud-based POS systems can be compatible with traditional POS hardware in addition to mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones, Android devices, and more. Cloud-based POS offers the ability to access data from anywhere there is an internet connection and normally offers faster setup due to it being run remotely.

Payment processing is done by payment processors which are often third party companies hired by a merchant to handle credit card transactions. Payment processors are broken down into two types: front-end and back-end. The front-end processors perform card associations, authorizations, and settlement services while back-end processors accept settlements from front-end processes and move money from issuing banks to merchant banks.

Modern payment processing is usually provided in the software as a service (SaaS) model, giving merchants a single simple electronic portal that allows them to process payments in various forms including recurring payments, web payments, checks, and more all in the same place.
