Over the past two years there have been an overwhelming number of new retail-oriented "mobile solutions" hitting the market. If you attended the May NRA show in Chicago, you witnessed vast amounts of techno-froth whipped up by restaurateurs' visions of iPads, text-based marketing and waitlist management platforms, guest facing ordering and payment systems, and many other downloadable consumer apps, all promising great new futures for retailers and the VCs backing these initiatives.
Many of these new offerings require, or greatly benefit from, some level of integration with a retailer's POS system. Today's POS VAR faces great opportunity as well as significant challenge in navigating the emerging sea of offerings and the changes they imply to our respective businesses.
