AppRiver Analysts Track Spam Attack
AppRiver pinged me a few minutes ago about a big spam campaign being tracked today, with spammers focused on free file storage, and generating attacks at the rate of 1 million per hour. (That's about 277 attacks per second, thanks to AppRiver for doing that math, by the way.)
AppRiver Security Analyst Troy Gill identified the targeted sites as groups.yahoo.com, livejournal.com, and groups.google.com. "Through the utilization of an automated account creation process, spammers are hosting their spam images/links on these websites," says Gill. Using this kind of email spam campaign allows the spammers to piggy-back on the good reputation of Yahoo and the like, avoiding blacklisting." For more details, check out the AppRiver blog.
