Sterling Payment Technologies No Stranger To NFC Technology Used By Apple Pay

The company processed the first wireless, contactless payment using NFC in 2005.

Sterling Payment Technologies, a leading payment processing provider, announced recently that it is supporting Apple Pay, the new mobile payment solution for the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch.

"We're excited about the opportunities this new technology brings, both to the payments industry and to consumers," said Sterling President and CEO Paul Hunter. "Now that Apple has made paying with a smartphone secure and easy to use, consumers will readily adopt mobile payments."

The Apple Pay system uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to process transaction data.

In 2005, Sterling processed the payment industry's first wireless, contactless payment using NFC at a PGA tournament in a joint effort with MasterCard and ViVOtech (now operating as Sequent).

"NFC has not been widely used, especially in the United States," Hunter said."Apple's adoption of NFC and EMV will give these technologies the momentum they have needed."

American Express, MasterCard and Visa support Apple Pay. So do the card-issuing banks responsible for 83 percent of credit card transactions in the United States.

The ability to pay using Apple technology will only be available in stores that have installed payment acceptance devices equipped to accommodate NFC.

Sterling is testing several product options to support Apple Pay and will be releasing stand-alone terminals and integrated solutions within the next 30 days.

POS developers will need to integrate with a payment gateway like Sterling's, which supports Apple Pay.
