A recent infographic compiled by N-Able Technologies highlights five common malware categories that might be lurking in your customers’ computers, stalking users’ money, personal data, and resources. Since the best defense is a good offense, the first step to protecting clients is to understand the most common threats and how to defend against them.

The first category is root kits, which target information using stealth tactics, modifying the operating system to hide. Root kits provide remote access or control of a computer and allow the malware to “hide in plain sight,” by disguising themselves as ordinary files that antivirus software will overlook. The best defense is to apply heuristics and algorithms to block them.  Heuristics evaluate actions rather than files, and thus is able to identify malware before it can be executed in the operating system.
