Three current developments in data protection give us a fairly clear picture of what the future holds for backup and recovery in IT. Consider these three advances the short, medium, and long views on trends that we will see ahead. Like most scenes, sometimes we see just those things we want to, but these three advancements will have unmistaken advantages. Do not bother wearing a hat, because the trend winds will blow them away. Your brain should be fine, though.

First, we can expect considerable and continued reductions in the footprint for storage and subsequent price per terabyte (TB). Currently, 6 TB hard disk drives (HDDs) are available with 8 TB drives on the horizon. The first effect of this on customers is that they are able to purchase less expensive 4 TB drives as 6 TB HDDs hit the market, followed immediately by operational reasons to justify the expense for replacing older disk arrays for faster speeds and less costly storage footprints. Add to that the development of solid state drives (SDDs). Intel has announced that 2 TB SATA SSDs are almost here. The effect of incredibly fast storage media changes two things in the data protection space: lower costs per TB of storage aligned with affordable prices for higher transfer speeds. This is the short view.
